The Ethics and Economics of Grammar Instruction: Imagined Communities and Sentence-Level Pedagogy Grammar courses differ from writing courses in their potential for cooptation: the outward focus of the courses means these courses risk functioning as mills to produce linguistically homogenous speakers and writers, trained to be good service workers in the globalized economy. I argue that grammar courses equip students with the skills they need to understand and evaluate the multiple linguistic identities available in school, at work, in communities, and in their lives as citizens.
