UNCLP presents this lecture on Wednesday,March 11th, 2015. Alex Schneider, professor of Modern China Studies in Göttingen University, will share his thoughts on the cultural and spiritual history of modern China at the United Nations on March 11th. Ever since the late 19th century, Chinese elites not only faced the threat of political and economic imperialism, but also the threat of cultural extinction. Behind these threats more fundamental challenges were hidden, challenges not specific for the Chinese situation, but universal challenges of the modern condition. In Alex Schneider's presentation he will outline the cultural threat, the ways Chinese elites reacted to it and how conservative intellectuals engaged with the modern condition. In a second part, he will relate these questions to recent cultural developments in China.
