Can an algorithm find true love? Professor Mann looks at the mathematics that powers dating websiteshttp://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and... Computer systems use mathematics to fly aircraft, carry out complex financial transactions and calculate the optimal design for racing cars. But mathematics helps solve many other problems: how to assign students to rooms in university halls of residence? how a computer dating agency can most effectively pair off its clients? Fascinating mathematical techniques have been developed for these problems and this lecture presents and discusses in simple terms, various non-numerical mathematical algorithms. The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. This tradition continues today with all of our five or so public lectures a week being made available for free download from our website. There are currently over 1,500 lectures free to access or download from the website. Website: Twitter: Facebook:
