John Simmons, Commonwealth Professor of Philosophy and professor of law at the University of Virginia, gives a lecture exploring the possible meanings and sources of "the consent of the governed," both in democratic and in non-democratic politics, and in the process, discuss the power of and the problems with the consent ideal. Simmons is the NEH Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Richmond for the fall 2008 semester.
