Lecture: M.I.A. (Toronto 2007)
In the pantheon of female singers, Maya Arulpragasam could stand in the line of women navigating their way through exotic technicolour soundscapes, somewhere between Siouxsie Sioux, Neneh Cherry, Ari Up and Kelis. She burst on the scene in 2004 with her Diplo-helmed mixtape, 'Piracy Funds Terrorism Volume 1', impressing indie cognoscenti worldwide with her rebel voice and signature blend of baile funk, hip hop, and dancehall. She's long moved on to full-fledged pop star status. But to this day, M.I.A. keeps proving her knack of blending twisted club sonics with outspoken social commentary and strong personality.
Watch her in session with Radio 1's Benji B at the Red Bull Music Academy 2007 in Toronto.
